Level Up Your Workouts at Chester Skateland

July 20, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

During the summer, the thought of working out evokes feelings of dread. No one wants to sweat it out at the gym, then sweat again the moment you step out of the building. But the more you sit around at home, the more you want to sit around. What’s the solution? Make your workout fun!

Roller-Skate for Your Health

Want to trick yourself into staying healthy? Roller-skating is great aerobic fitness, and it’s so much fun you’ll forget that it’s good for you. Skating is a simple way to distract kids from screens, bring the family together, or sneak in some exercise after work. It’s a fun social activity, a good stress-reliever, and a great way to get your heart pumping. What are the tangible health benefits of roller-skating?

  • Woman roller skating in park smiling summerIt’s recommended by the American Heart Association as a heart-strengthening exercise. Moderate skating gets your heart rate to about 140-160 beats per minute, while strenuous skating can increase your heart rate to 180.
  • It works your muscles. As you might expect, skating is great for building muscles in your legs and glutes. But it’s also good for your obliques, your core, and even your arms!
  • Skating burns calories. For an average-sized person, roller-skating burns 9 or 10 calories per minute. Depending on how hard you skate, you can burn between 300 and 600 calories per hour!
  • It’s good for cross-training. Skating has similar health benefits to running, but unlike many cross-training sports, it’s easy on the joints. Skaters get 50% less joint impact than runners, so it’s a great way to keep up fitness and protect your body.
  • It improves overall athleticism. The more you skate, the more agile, flexible, and coordinated you’ll become. That’s because skating strengthens the muscles in your legs and core. Skating is also a great way to build endurance so you can workout longer without getting tired.

Leave boring workouts behind. Get fit at Chester Skateland this summer.

Don’t Sweat Blisters

May 11, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Are you ready to banish skating blisters? We’ve got you covered. Our team has been around the rink more than a few times, and you only have to get a blister once before vowing, “never again!” Don’t sweat blisters this summer. Keep your feet happy with these tips from Chester Skateland.

How to Avoid Skating Blisters

  1. Keep your feet dry. Sweat is a major contributor to causing blisters. That means the harder you skate, the bigger risk you have of developing blisters. If you know you’re gonna go hard at the rink, sprinkle talcum inside your socks. This will reduce friction and help keep your feet dry while you skate.
  2. woman's socksWear good socks. Your favorite glow-in-the-dark socks may look awesome, but those worn places are just begging for blisters. Wear socks that fit well, have good support, and cushion your foot. Choose a synthetic, moisture-wicking sports fabric instead of cotton, which retains moisture.
  3. Bring a spare pair. Are you planning a full Saturday of skating? Bring an extra pair of socks and change into a fresh pair between sessions. If blisters start popping up, double up on socks to give your feet extra protection.
  4. Know your feet. Do you always develop blisters in the same places? Put a blister bandage or moleskin over sensitive places like your heel, the side of your outer toes, and other places where hot spots may form.
  5. Be proactive. If you feel a blister or hot spot, don’t ignore the problem. Strip off your socks and put protective padding (such as a bandage, moleskin, or foam pad) over the area. Make sure it has adhesive so it won’t shift while you skate. Trust us, that would only make things worse!

What’s the #1 secret to avoiding blisters? Wearing properly fitted skates! If rental skates don’t fit you well, invest in your own roller-skates. Skate blister-free all summer at Chester Skateland.

How to Become a Better Skater

April 20, 2017 by TaylorB 1 Comment

Call us biased, but there’s no family activity in Chester that’s more fun than roller-skating. Skating is awesome exercise, easy to learn, and fun for all ages. It’s affordable, engaging, and indoors, so you don’t have to worry about the weather. And you can even bring your own skates! Are you just learning how to skate? Did you mastered the basics long ago, but you want to try something new? Chester Skateland will help you take your roller-skating skills to the next level.

3 Tips for Becoming a Better Skater

  1. boy catching air on inline skatesTake a class. If you’re serious about this skating business, there’s no better way to improve. At a skating lesson, you get personal tips from the pros. Sign up for beginner, intermediate, or advanced skate lessons at Chester Skateland. You’ll even get free admission to the next session so you can practice.
  2. Balance. Speed, tricks, and maneuverability all depend on having excellent balance. How can you improve your skating balance? Once you have it down with two feet firmly planted, practice skating on one foot. Raise one skate to your ankle. As your balance improves, raise your skate higher and higher. Switch legs and balance on the other side. It’s best to start out near the wall in case you need extra support. If you’re worried about falling, practice stationary balancing drills before hitting the rink.
  3. Whip out your phone. There are plenty of advanced skaters out there sharing tips on how to improve your skating. Sit back and soak up the knowledge! Trying to master a new trick? Have a friend video your moves. You’ll be able to see which parts look great, and which parts need more practice.

Practice makes perfect! Visit Chester Skateland and power up your skating skills.

5 Rules for Smooth Skating

April 10, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

Do you know the rules of the rink? We’re not here to put a damper on your good time. In fact, following the rules makes skating even more fun! Why? A few simple skating rules minimizes injuries, keeps things running smoothly, and prevents other skaters from blocking your path (and vice versa). Enjoy the benefits of roller-skating without worrying about tripping over wayward kids. Follow these skating rules for Chester Skateland!

5 Rules for Rink Safety

  1. STOP painted on the groundStay in your lane. Are you a newbie skater? Skate near the wall, where you’ll have something to hold onto for balance. Are you a pro at skating tricks? Stay in the middle where there’s room to get wild. Love speed, but prefer smooth skating? The rest of the rink is for you! Stay in your lane to prevent skating pileups. And remember: always skate in the same direction as the rest of traffic.
  2. Break up the group. It’s fine to skate in groups of two (or even three, if the rink isn’t crowded), but skating four or five abreast isn’t just rude, it’s dangerous.
  3. Go low-tech. What happens when you drop your phone on the skating floor? It trips up another skater, causing injuries and some serious damage to your phone (plus crunched fingers for you, if you’re trying to grab it before it gets damaged). Before rolling onto the rink, leave phones, loose jackets, and anything else you might drop with your shoes in a locker.
  4. No food or drinks on the rink. If you need a refreshment, take a breather by the snack bar.
  5. Pay attention! You may be a pro, but plenty of skaters are just learning a love of skating. Keep an eye out for stray kids and shaky skaters.

Plan an End of the Year Skating Party

March 28, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

It’s almost time! Kids may be chattering excitedly about spring break adventures, but teachers know that summer vacation is just around the corner. Your students have worked hard. Reward them for a great year with an end of school party at Chester Skate Land.

How to Throw a Successful End of the Year Party

  1. kids leaving schoolPlan ahead. It’s easy to get caught up in lesson plans and end of the year exams, but the key to a successful end of school party (and holding onto your sanity) is to book your event early. Remember, room parents can be a big help when it comes to planning a student skating party.
  2. Choose your theme. Is this a “ summer, at last!” bash? A way to recognize your high achievers? Or just a fun way for your students to exercise outside of P.E.? Make sure you let parents know what kind of party it will be. Some may want to tag along and listen to their child’s achievements.
  3. Know the benefits. Are you wondering why a roller-skating party beats a classroom party? Not only is it a fun way to get the kids out of their normal routine, roller-skating is also great for the brain! Clear out the cobwebs, start a successful transition, and encourage a summer of creativity.
  4. Spread the word. Send out announcements early on so you can get permission forms signed, decide on achievement and citizenship awards, and ramp up the anticipation.

Chester Skate Land makes end of the year parties easy! We take care of setup and cleanup, food and fun, and providing a private party table. Call to ask about our group skating event options.

5 Kids Birthday Party Trends We Love

  2. Focus on fun. No matter what age they’re turning, kids really only care about three things: cake, presents, and entertainment. Roller-skating is a great activity for kids of all ages, with plenty of opportunities for skate races, limbo, and other competitive games.
  3. Themes. Okay, so you’re ditching the DIY donut wall and the color coordinated chalkboard signs. That doesn’t mean your party has to be boring! Celebrate your child’s favorite thing with a themed or costumed celebration. Need some ideas? Pokemon, Star Wars, and emojis are popular kids party themes right now.
  4. happy birthday balloonsStatement balloons. With just the right touch of flair, statement balloons are a great way to make your child feel special without driving yourself crazy decorating for their party. Don’t forget to snap a few pics for Facebook!

How Much Do You Know about the History of Skating?

February 17, 2017 by TaylorB Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever laced a pair of skates, you know that roller-skating is a blast. But did you know that it has a crazy past? We’re sharing our favorite facts about the history of roller-skating.

5 Fun Facts about Roller-Skating

  1. vintage roller skatesRoller-skates were invented in 1760 by John Joseph Merlin. They started with a bang (literally—he crashed into a mirror), but didn’t gain popularity until the invention of skate trucks let people actually turn while roller-skating. Before that they only had two directions to choose from: backwards and forwards!
  2. Skating isn’t all breezing around the rink. In addition to aggressive trick skating (think extreme sports), popular skating sports include jam skating, derby skating, and speed skating. Jam skating uses the principles of artistry and rhythm to create complex dance choreography on skates. Derby skating is an aggressive, team-oriented sport comprised of mostly female athletes. And inline speed skating is used by some Olympic athletes to practice during the off-season.
  3. Charlie Chaplin was a pro roller-skater, incorporating complex spins and slapstick falls into many of his silent films.
  4. And other celebrities love to skate, too! Prince was such an avid skater that he owned a pair of custom-designed skates. And Beyoncé threw her 21st birthday party at a skating center in her hometown. Not to mention all the roller-skating seen on TV, in movies, and in music videos.
  5. Even the Amish love to skate. In fact, there was a big debate in the 90s about whether teens’ new inline skates crossed a cultural line because they went so much faster than the traditional quad skates.

Have a fun skating fact? Want to learn about us? Can’t wait to go skating? We’ll be waiting! Visit Chester Skateland for family fun and fresh skate facts.
